Listservs at Your Service!

There are a number of mailing lists-or what's known as listservs-to which nonprofit professionals can subscribe to and receive peer-based feedback on a variety of issues.

Here's how it works:  Pick the discussion group(s) that you are interested in and sign up by e-mail. You then join the online discussion, which is delivered by individual e-mail right to your inbox. Members of the listserv pose questions, answers, and general comments relevant to the list's focus.

This is an excellent way to be part of an extended community of nonprofit professionals where you can give and receive valuable feedback.  Below is a list of popular nonprofit listservs:

Getting to know Nancy McEneny

A member of AFP since 1998 and the Director of Community Affairs and Development for the past six years at LifeSpan, Nancy McEneny believes she was called to fundraising at the age of five, after trick or treating for UNICEF.

Nancy took her first AFP course in 1996, before joining the profession when she was a board member at A Child’s Place, and believes strongly in the value of AFP membership.  “Every time I attend an AFP meeting, training, or conference I walk away with new information, an new contact, or affirmation that I have chosen the best profession”, says McEneny.

Nancy has also had many roles over the years at AFP, including:

Mentor, Philanthropy Day Committee, Fundraising Day Committee 2004, 2005, 2006, 2006 International Committee for selection of Foundation of the Year, Statewide Conference Chair 2007, Chaired Survey Course and First Course Training, Hosted CFRE Exam, Delegate Assembly 2005 and 2006, Board of Directors served on education committee and executive committee as secretary.

Currently Nancy’s career path has led her to LifeSpan, which is a large non-profit serving children and adults with developmental disabilities in the areas of education, employment, and enrichment.  LifeSpan operates 41 locations across North Carolina between Waynesville and Burlington.  Nancy says she has a fabulous job where everyday is different.  “I serve on the leadership team and am involved in all aspects of non-profit management. It is a privilege to get to go to work each day at LifeSpan and work to raise funds or awareness that will make a difference for people with developmental disabilities.”

A passionate advocate for people without a voice, Nancy feels that raising funds for people with developmental disabilities is very difficult and requires that you leave your ego behind.  “Before great amounts of money will ever be raised we must first educate the public about disabilities and why people with developmental disabilities deserve a place in our society.”

Among her many accomplishments:

Education:                   Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude, Queens University

Family:                        Recently separated, son Phillip (23) in Wilmington and

daughter Ashley (20) in Savannah

Neighborhood:            Strawberry Hills

Favorite Book:            The Iliad

Favorite Quote:           "Procrastination is the thief of Joy"

Other non-profit jobs: Director of Development for Friendship Trays and A Child's Place
