The mission of the Professional Advancement Division is to support the development of philanthropic fundraising professionals through education, research, and information dissemination.

Division staff and volunteers pursue this mission through a variety of programs ranging from basic training through intermediate and advanced education, to initiatives in research, publication and professional certification.

The goal of the division is to make available to philanthropic fundraisers, during all steps of their careers, the tools and information they need to grow both professionally and personally.

AFP Charlotte Mentor Program
May 2008: AFP Charlotte's Mentoring Class of 2008 had 19 mentees and 19 mentor participants.  This was a nine month mentoring program with a primary goal of offering one to one mentoring between experienced development professionals with at least five years professional experience, in partnership with mentees with between one and five years experience.  Mentoring relationships typically continue beyond for many years.  Sixteen mentees participated in the first ever AFP Charlotte Mentoring Program graduation, receiving a certificate of achievement with words from Donna Rice, mentee, who works as a development officer with the American Red Cross.

Each mentee received a copy of Hank Rosso's "Achieving Excellence in Fund Raising".  As a group, mentees participated in three sessions including orientation, self evaluation and skills sets, and a panel discussion on ethics for development professionals.  Several of our mentees joined AFP and other non profit committees.  One mentee passed the CFRE exam.

We look forward to welcoming new mentees and mentors for next year's program.  Applications begin in July 2008.
